Be aware that using images that are covered by copyright restrictions for business purposes may lead to large legal and financial headaches. It is a good habit to get into using sites which are 'Creative Commons' where the copyright restrictions either do not exist or are very lenient. The Green Creative Commons site is the best place to start - but also have a look immediately beneath it at some of the fact sheets you can download from their site. As always, you should acknowledge your source in some kind of a bibliography - that is where you got your image from.
To get YouTube videos which are Creative Commons - simply search YouTube for your subject and add the words "Creative Commons" to the search!
We recommend that you use imagese from sites with Creative Commons licening. Wikimedia Commons is excellent but you can also search the main image databanks in the large search engines like Google Images. Just make sure to add the words "Creative Commons" after your search term.
This all has to do with copyright. Traditionally people who create something hold the copyright to it; in other words they own it and control who can use it and how it can be used. When you get into business for your self or are employed by others then you will have to be VERY careful about how you use images/sound/videos because you or your company can be sued if you use another person's property without having first gained their permission (which also often means paying them a lot of money). Go to the Smart Copy Copyright site for Australian Schools for more information.
It is best if you avoid all of the above if you can do so... and this is where Creative Commons licening comes in. See the clip below for more information
One of the best know sites is Wikimedia Commons and we suggest you go there first (see the link on the left side of this page)
Creative Commons Licenses have been improved December 2013. More information can be found at http://creativecommons.org/Version4
